Let's Analyse Electra Heart

So tomorrow (Thursday 8th) marks the end of Marina and the Diamonds' Electra Heart - 2 years after she posted the first video from the project. With speculation rife amongst the Diamonds, trying to guess what the all important final part will be, everyone's trying to guess the ending... what we do know, however, is that it will be the death of Electra Heart. Whether it's an actual death, or one of those Doctor Who style cop-out deaths, if the past parts are anything to go by, it'll be good.

I decided to go back through the story again and analyse just what happens to poor old Electra...

We were all a bit like 'dafuk?' when Marina posted the video to 'Fear And Loathing' two years ago, which had a very prominent Part 1 in the title. Cue every Diamond trying to conjure up their own theories and storylines as to whatever the heck Marina was starting, if not through sheer excitement as we hadn't really heard much from Miss Diamandis over 2011. 

Marina is seen singing to herself in a mirror, and seems to be reflecting on something, before grabbing a pair of scissors and getting a bit snip-happy on her beautiful barnet. The video is full of arty shots of all of the above from about every angle possible, and then we see Marina walk outside to potentially show off her new 'do to the world. She still looks down and the camera shots change focus and other mindfuckery goes on with the lens - we're all here to see Marina, not the background Mr Camera Man.

The song, put simply, is about wanting to have a more positive outlook on life, instead of always living 'in bitterness,' and this kind of mental rebirth is matched by her DIY haircut, whilst the different shots remind me of a unclear identity, or something...

The next part takes us to Marina with her short hair and then putting on a blonde wig. Little did we know that wigs would become one of the focal points of the era (see, Primadonna, the roots etc.) and in 'Radioactive,' Mazza seems to be running away with a man who might just be a boyfriend/lover of some kind...

They have a lot of fun together, drinking milk straight from the carton, whilst going round the supermarket wearing crazy masks and playing with a ball in a diner. Unfortunately more rebelzz!!1! than rebels, but still a fun video all the same, if only to see Marina's amazing dance/twirling. It's a little unclear what happens at the end of the video, but she removes the blonde wig, maybe to show that she is fake/a character, adding to the identity issues from before.

This just about qualifies as a video, but the next part sees Marina telling us just what Electra Heart is going to be about, by listing the different archetypes - Housewife, Beauty Queen, Homewrecker and Idle Teen. These didn't really come into any kind of fruition over the era, but some of the songs off the album are definitely linked. The video is simply a camera moving from side to side and slightly zooming in while Marina casually undresses us with her eyes. I think it's safe to say she looks absolutely flawless, even with the grey hair...

The lyrics speak of losing your identity and being a bit fake... as well as asking 'Electra Heart... are you faux real?' What a genius play on words.

'Primadonna,' the proper lead single of the era, sees Marina dressed in pastels swanning about in a pretty nice house. Electra Heart wants to be number one, and seems to be playing the housewife role really well... it's a little hard to really guess what's going on here, she's got a big house that probably belongs to her partner, and doesn't really do much work apart from enjoying her new life...

I'd like to take a second to talk about the hair. A lot of people were not fans of the hair, and I can understand why... such a light blonde and dark roots just look terrible, but I quite liked them. I saw it is as the character slipping a little - where she died her hair blonde to become this innocent girl, her dark roots are coming through and being revealed. Little did we know this was in fact, a wig, after Marina suffered some hair trauma at the hairdressers and had to cut most of it off. Poor love :(

This is also where we first see the addition of the heart on her cheek, which has confused/angered a lot more non-Diamonds than you may imagine...

Much like 'The Archetypes,' 'Su-Barbie-A' is a one-take video complete with a mixture of audio treats. The camera pans in and out of Marina stood at the front door with her face covered by a shadow, and as we pan back in we see the head has turned 180 degrees. Now, I don't know if that's referencing something, or just random, but... that happens...

What may sound like random clips altered and shoved in, all collate together to create something quite deep. The Barbie references add to the new archetype created by Marina - Su-Barbie-A. There are also references to the death of Sylvia Plath and The Stepford Wives, but the focus is generally on Barbie, with the line 'what do I do with my old Barbie' seemingly linking to throwing the past away, a recurring theme, in my eyes, of the story.

So, 'Power and Control,' the next single, saw Marina and a male lead, fighting for the control in the relationship. Her roots have grown further which could symbolise the darkness shining through again. There was a lot of dark blue and black imagery, a lot of shadows and silhouettes, and an infamous scene where Marina throws a bucket of ice over the guy as he does some impressive upside down sit-up things. A nice contrast, and he has his top off too if anyone who's into that needs another reason to watch...

Speaking of tops off, how about 6 in a shower room with Marina wearing a short PVC skirt? Then the video for 'How To Be A Heartbreaker' is perfect for you...

Electra starts flirting with a number of different men, and seems to be so bitter from being hurt by love, she wants to hurt other people. She gets up close and personal with a number of different men, including one who looks like Jesus, and seems to really enjoy being in the shower room with 6 obviously gay men who play-fight in the background, or kind've push her around with their foreheads. I'm not even joking, the guy with the tattoo on his chest just has his forehead on her head at one point, trying to look seductive or something to the camera, it's really weird.

Another thing you may notice is the nice array of hair ribbons going on in the video, and the fact she seems to have ditched the blonde wig... plus the random scene near the end where she's seen holding a 'severed' head of a man. So random. Also - so so many derp faces. I feel like you could create a drinking game just for this video...

Another random simple video sees Marina in front of some tiles looking sad, and then kind of happy, and then kind of seductive as an extended clip of never-heard-before-then-put-up-for-free-download song, 'E.V.O.L.' plays. We have a couple of 'flashback' scenes which don't really make any sense, but add a nice little bit of colour if only for a second.

There's no word on the man-front though...

... which is weird seeing as she's about to get married or something in 'State of Dreaming.'

Verging away from the traditional white wedding dress, which is good as Electra is far from pure, she seems to have been jolted at the alter, and left heartbroken again. This is what I think anyway, she looks kind of upset again, and then kind of happy again, and there's lot of arm raising, so it's a bit hard to tell how she's feeling. Then again, if the lyrics are anything to go by, she's been faking things a little bit, so god knows what's real and what isn't.

I've spoken about this before in another post, but I feel like 'Lies' is set during the honeymoon, which she attends by herself, especially due to the Miss Havisham style scene...

So what will the final part be? Will it be fan-favourite, or perhaps she'll throw us a curveball in the form of 'Valley of the Dolls,' or even something random like 'Homewrecker...' Either way, I'm freaking excited...
